Chapter 9-Contemporary Realistic Fiction:

  • Only realistic settings
  • abstract themes
    • Family
    • friendship
    • humor
    • adventure
    • social reality
    • personal issues
I strongly disagree with the author about historical fiction being limited to "books with settings prior to 1970"(Anderson, 2013). I respect that for the purpose of this textbook Anderson has set these parameters, but I, while not a literature specialist so to speak, adhere to the guidelines of historical fiction being anything written accurately within the context of a historical setting, event, or time period that could  have taken place but involving fictional characters (names changed).
  • Bibliotherapy
    • an effective technique to help children cope with issues
Bibliotherapy is fascinating  to me as a technique to help children cope with the issues they face or simply see in the world. The use of first person in this technique helps readers to find the plot and characters more realistic therefore easily identifying with the book or having empathy.
  • Censorship
    • Individuals or groups w/strong convictions to deny specific materials for reading.
    • (David Levithan, 2010)..."in a digital world...the whole concept of banned books goes away....There are always access points."
  • Selecting versus Censoring
    • a person's perogative to select their own children's exposure should not prevent others from accessing the material.
"Attempting to protect children from painful subjects can, among other things, prevent children from understanding the plight of less fortunate people." (Anderson, 2013)
While I respect  parents' rights to monitor their children's exposure to materials, I do firmly believe that true censorship hinders a person from being more informed and enlightened, and creating in them the ability to empathize and better handle and understand subject matter that may experience themselves or witness in society today. Unfortunately, today's world offers unfavorable events and activities, and too much sheltering of our children is a diservice to the very children we are trying to 'protect'.

Chapter 10-Historical Fiction

  • Scott O'Dell Award-given to honor historical fiction of high literary quality.
  • Biographical Historic Fiction
    • largely fictional
    • possible embellishments
    • based on stories passed down orally to an author or family member.
  • Historical Fiction Periods
    • Image result for lincoln's grave robbers
    • Ancient Times
    • Medieval Times
    • Colonial Times
    • Revolutionary Era
    • Early Frontier Era
    • Civil War Era
    • Post-Civil War Era
    • World War Era
    • Great Depression Era
    • World War II Era
    • Post-World War II Era
    • Civil Rights Era

Similar to the author (Anderson), I did not consider myself a fan of  history until I discovered historical fiction. I was trying to find books for boys' interests, and came across this genre in young adult literature.

Vocabulary Building Strategies Integrating What We Know into Our Teaching According to Blachowiz and Fisher (2000), there are four basic guidelines for vocabulary instruction.
